At Burr Oark Farms, we raise our cattle with quality in mind. From breeding to finishing, we put extreme care and thought into the entire process. We have over 30 years experience producing grade A Choice beef. All our feed and grains are grown right on our farms so we can be sure that our beef is natural and antibiotic free.
Burr Oak Farms is never going to be Tyson Foods, or any other big time outfit you can think of. It is the culmination of dreams, aspirations and hard work for over 40 years of the owner, Ron Nicklaus. Physically it consists of 295 acres in western Vernon county, near Genoa in southwest Wisconsin. Our herd of cattle has been built since 1976 from a foundation of old line black Angus, beginning with three cows with heifer calves to an average of about 70 head today. Because they finish out at 1000-1200 lbs, we find they have less waste from excessive trim of fat while maintaining excellent marbling qualities. We even won the grand champion trophy at the carcass contest at the Vernon county fair one year!
We are dedicated to producing the highest quality beef at a competitive price. We feed our cattle the old-fashioned way. That means no hormones, implants, antibiotics or other artificial means. Cows are pasture bred by a herd bull, calves are weaned at 9 months and are fattened ready for sale by 18 months on average. A finishing diet heavy in oats and ground ear corn and free choice hay yields a superior product with outstanding flavor and tenderness.
We like our animals!! They are treated with utmost care and humane methods. It’s pretty simple, when they do better, we do better. We hope this brief summary of our modest beef operation gives you a sketch of who we are. Please feel free to contact us by email at rnicklaus@mwt.net with any questions.
